With a little planning you don’t have to settle. Taking a job that positions you for future success is realistic, but going in and out of transition every two years or so isn’t fun.
There are many names for these plans, ours is the “SmARTCareer Profile.” This plan includes, the basic skills and experiences, but goes much further, it requires you to CLEARLY list out the minimum requirements for you to accept a position, where you will compromise and the issues that no matter what you will not accept the position if these exist or don’t exist. It requires you to start thinking of yourself as a brand and how you add value.
If you want to win the job, that hiring manager has to see you as a unique person. This takes some time and thought. Don’t just dust off the old resume and update it. When candidates do this they generally end up in a position they really don’t want – in the end they settle or lower their standards.
